Description

1882-P VAM-22.2 — Doubled 8-2, Die Flakes 8's. This is a later die state of the VAM-22 obverse, retaining the same obverse (III2 21) as VAM-22 but now showing die flakes on both 8's of the date. The reverse (C3a) matches VAM-22 in a later state, with die flakes in the area of the eagle. Rarity is R-5 or less, with under 100 known examples. The obverse is classified as LVA III2 — a die type identified with three or more other die varieties through shared obverse or reverse dies. Die flakes are caused by small fragments of die steel spalling from the die face, producing raised lumps on struck coins at the precise location of the flake. On VAM-22.2, the flakes appear on both 8's of the date, providing an unmistakable progression marker distinguishing this sub-variety from the cleaner die state of VAM-22. Morgan Dollars were struck in 90% silver, 10% copper. The Philadelphia Mint struck 11.1 million Morgan Dollars in 1882.
