Description

Identified by raised dots from a rusted die surface and three curved scratches on the eagle's wing, VAM-1G on the 1882-P Morgan Dollar is further distinguished by a notable die pairing relationship: this reverse die is only known paired with the repunched date obverse cataloged as VAM-9, and specimens typically display a characteristic chip between the loops of the first 8 in the date. The raised dots from die rust indicate moisture reached the die surface during storage or use, causing oxidation pits that transfer as raised features onto struck coins — an unusual manufacturing artifact sometimes called "water spotting." Struck in 90% silver at the Philadelphia Mint, the 1882-P is a common date in the Morgan series but the VAM-1G die combination adds variety interest. The exclusive pairing with the VAM-9 repunched date obverse means collectors can cross-verify attribution: if the reverse shows the three curved wing scratches and rusted die dots, the obverse should display the repunched date, and vice versa.
