1882-P VAM-1F1

Description

Discovered in February 2008 by the attributor identified as JV and revised in 2014, this Philadelphia Morgan dollar is classified 1F1 III2 1 with a C3a reverse, designated Clashed Obverse n G. The obverse die shows transferred reverse lettering: the edge of the G from God and a shallow n from In appear incuse next to Liberty's neck, impressed when the dies struck each other without a planchet between them. Light polishing lines run across the face in various directions, likely applied by the Mint to remove fine rust pits, a detail that led to this die's former classification as VAM-22 before revision. The reverse C3a is a normal die. This variety shares the exact same reverse die as 1882-P VAM-1B and forms the exact same die pair as 1882-P VAM-1F2. Research notes indicate the clash letters appear unusually far from the neck, making this an atypical clash transfer distance. The polishing evidence suggests the die was reconditioned but retained enough clash remnants to remain classifiable, documenting the Mint's effort to extend die life through surface treatment.
