1882-O VAM-35

Description

Discovered by Bill Fivaz in July 1997, the 1882-O VAM-35 is cataloged as III2 10 - C3h with the title Metal in 882, O/O Lower Left, rated I-2 R-4. The obverse die III2 10 shows die flakes in the openings of the 882 digits. The 18 is not doubled on this die, distinguishing it from earlier listings that incorrectly suggested machine doubling. The reverse C3h is defined by a repunched O mintmark showing the original punch impression on the lower left side of the opening. This reverse was shared with VAM-13 and VAM-14, reflecting the common practice at New Orleans of reusing reverse dies across multiple obverse pairings. The I-2 R-4 rarity rating places VAM-35 as reasonably obtainable for committed collectors. Morgan Dollar mintmark repunching at New Orleans was a frequent result of the individual hand-punching process, where alignment between the first and subsequent applications varied per die. The metal-in-digit obverse markers combined with the O/O Lower Left reverse create a clearly defined variety within the competitive 1882-O VAM landscape.
