Description

Discovered by Martin Field in December 1980, the 1882-O VAM-31 is a double date variety classified under die III2 22·C3a, exhibiting detailed and individually documented doubling on each digit of the date. Each numeral — 1, 8, 8, and 2 — shows its own distinct doubled characteristics, making this a comprehensive date doubling rather than an isolated digit variety. The New Orleans Mint O mintmark is present. Among all Morgan Dollar varieties, VAM-31's SSDC (Silver Dollar Set Registry) population stood at zero as of February 8, 2023, meaning that no example had been graded and registered in the SSDC population report at that date — an extraordinary rarity indicator for a cataloged VAM. A zero SSDC population does not necessarily mean no examples exist, but it reflects either extreme rarity, the difficulty of locating certified examples, or the absence of collector-submitted examples in the registry at the time of the population snapshot. Collecting context: Martin Field's attribution in 1980 predates modern die photography standards, and VAM-31's zero population makes original die research the primary reference for authentication.
