1880-O VAM-29
Error
Description
Discovered by Martin Field in September 1979, 1880-O VAM-29 is attributed Doubled 188, O/O and carries the designation III2 21 – C3a in the VAM reference (page 176). The obverse, III2 21, shows the 1 doubled slightly to the left and the 88 doubled more strongly to the left. The reverse, C3a, displays the O mintmark doubled to the right — an O/O repunching — with die cracks running from the tips of the wreath to the rim. Rarity is rated R-5 or less. The 1880-O Morgan Dollar was struck at the New Orleans Mint in 90% silver and is one of the more actively attributed dates in the Morgan series. The doubled 88 on the obverse is the primary visual diagnostic, while the O/O repunched mintmark adds a second attributable feature on the reverse. The wreath-to-rim die cracks provide the confirmation used to separate this pairing from similar dies in other 1880-O VAM attributions. An R-5 variety places this among the scarcer New Orleans Morgan Dollar VAMs in the reference.
