Howard Newcomb's February 1913 discovery of this die pairing established the baseline VAM-1 attribution for the 1880-O Morgan Dollar, representing the normal die combination against which all subsequent 1880-O varieties are measured. Cataloged as 1 III2 1 - C3a (Small O) with a rarity index of 176, this variety pairs Obverse III2 1, a normal die of the III2 type featuring the standard Liberty Head portrait by George T. Morgan, with Reverse C3a, a normal die of the C3 type distinguished by its small, round mint mark positioned centered and upright below the eagle's tail feathers. The "Small O" designation is critical for 1880-O collectors because the New Orleans Mint employed multiple mint mark punch sizes during this era, and distinguishing the small round O from medium and large O punches is fundamental to proper VAM attribution. The III2 obverse type reflects the specific hub and die characteristics cataloged in the Van Allen-Mallis classification system, where Roman numerals identify hub types and Arabic numerals track individual dies within each type.
