Description

=1880-CC VAM-8 8/7 Dash= Discovered by Ted Clark, October 1970. Reverse discovered by Howard Newcomb, February 1913. Revised 2010. 8 (revised) III2 6 ∙ C3d (8/7 Dash) (177) Obverse III2 6 – 8 repunched over 7. A short ear shows at the left at top of the second 8. Bottom of stem shows as low dash below 8. Bottom loop of 8 shows two diagonal polishing lines and die chips on the right side and top. The 0 shows no part of the 9 but has a slight bulge on outside at 10 o'clock. First 8 is doubled at top inside of lower loop and has die chips inside upper loop. Same as III2 6 (VAM-7), but has been further polished down after receiving heavy clash marks. A vertical polishing mark shows on right outside between loops of second 8. Dash under second eight and vertical polishing line between outside loops. Reverse C3d – Normal die of C3 type with centered small I CC mint mark and slanted arrow feathers. CC has a dot of metal in center of each C. Die scratch through M of AMERICA, bottom of eagle's right wing and inside of eagle's left wing. ;Emission Sequence :Obverse: :Reverse: Comments: # This obverse die was used on 1880-CC VAM-7 & 1880-CC VAM-7A; then polished down & re-used on 1880-CC VAM-8 & 1880-CC VAM-9. # Same as 1880-CC VAM-7 but has been further polished down after receiving heavy die clash marks. Vertical polishing marks on right outside between loops of 2nd 8. # Same reverse as 1880-CC VAM-6 but with fine pitting at S & T in States. This reverse die was used on 1880-CC VAM-6 & 1880-CC VAM-8.
