Description

A dollar from the Carson City Mint, the 1880 (CC) Morgan Dollar belongs to the Morgan Dollars 1878-1921 series. The Carson City Mint struck 591,000 Morgan dollars in 1880; about 96,000 of them were melted for low fineness, leaving 495,000 issued. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton, encircled by stars and the reverse displays an eagle with outstretched wings clutching an olive branch and arrows, surrounded by a wreath. Struck during the Gilded Age of rapid industrialization and the great silver debates, when monetary policy shaped elections and economic destiny. The Carson City Mint operated from 1870 to 1893, striking coins from Comstock Lode silver and gold โ€” among the most collected mintmarks in numismatics. Estimated market value ranges from $266 to $2.0K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7100.
