1879-O VAM-8A

Description

Discovered by Leonard Hinckley in February 1974, VAM-8A of the 1879-O Morgan dollar is designated III2 2 C3b as Die Chips in 8, from die pair (176). This variety represents a later die state of VAM-8, meaning specimens were struck after the die acquired additional characteristics beyond those present in the VAM-8 attribution. The obverse type III2 2 is a normal die with die chips accompanied by horizontal polishing marks inside the upper loop of the 8, plus die chips at the top and bottom inside of the lower loop. These die chips within the 8 serve as the primary attribution markers, as their specific positions distinguish this variety from other 1879-O issues. The reverse is a normal C3b type featuring a large IV O centered mintmark. The relationship between VAM-8 and VAM-8A is important for studying die progression, as the later die state designation indicates additional deterioration during continued use of the same obverse die. The 1879-O Morgan dollar was struck at the New Orleans Mint, and Hinckley's 1974 discovery places it among the earlier cataloged entries for this date and mint combination.
