Description

1879-O VAM-14 Doubled 879, Large O Discovered by Alfred Bonard, January 1974. Revised 2011. Revised March 2023 14 III2 9 ∙ C3b (Doubled 879 & Ear, Large O) (176) Obverse III2 9 – Doubled 879 in date. Slightly doubled 8 at top inside of lower loop, 7 doubled at right side below crossbar and as a short spike on right side of lower serif, 9 doubled slightly on surface at left outside of both loops. Slightly doubled hair edge at top of ear. Reverse C3b – Normal die of C3 type with large IV O centered mint mark. Some die stages will show a spike at the eagle's beak. Emission Sequence Obverse: Reverse: Comments: This is really easily confused with the 1879-O VAM-25. This variety can be found in PL Revised in March 2023 to add spike at beak. Not known at the time whether it's on some or all die stages.
