Description
Sharing the VAM-210B2 designation with its Reverse of 1878 counterpart but paired with the Reverse of 1879 hub, this 1878 Philadelphia Mint Morgan Dollar variety was discovered by Mark Kimpton in May 2003 and renumbered as VAM-212A in November 2022. Cataloged as 210B2 II 2, C2a (Line Through IB, Clashed Obverse n and st), die pair 194, it exhibits the same diagnostic features — a raised line through IB on the reverse and clash transfers of the lowercase n and st onto the obverse — but on a die paired with the Reverse of 1879 hub type. The Reverse of 1879 is distinguished by its angled top arrow feather, contrasting with the parallel top arrow feather of the Reverse of 1878. The obverse is Obverse II 2, showing raised dots on the LIBERTY area. That two parent listings exist under the same VAM number reflects the complexity of 1878 Morgan Dollar die pair attribution, where the same obverse die could theoretically be paired with either reverse hub type. The November 2022 renumbering to VAM-212A consolidated the catalog entry. Both reverse type listings should be consulted when attributing this variety. Heavy die clash marks with partial incuse n of In from reverse next to Liberty head neck and partial incuse st of Trust from reverse showing in right hair vee of lower hair edge.
