1878 Morgan Dollar - Reverse of 1879 - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006

Description

1878 WDDO-006 is a doubled die obverse on the 1878 Morgan dollar (Reverse of 1879), cataloged by the Wexler team. LIBERTY shows a close spread to the right, most letters of E PLURIBUS UNUM show doubling, and the date is doubled as well. All the stars at left and right show traces of it, most strongly L7, R1 and R4. The obverse has a broken lower left on UNUM's N and a broken lower right on its M, unchanged across Obverse Stages A, B and C. Reverse Stage A, the VAM-40 die pairing, has die cracks joining most of the upper letters of USA and the lower parts of ONE DOLLAR's letters, a V-shaped scratch between the leaves and ICA of AMERICA, and a broken lower D in DOLLAR. Reverse Stage B is the VAM-31 pairing, and Reverse Stage C is the VAM-110 pairing. Istvan Henrik submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as 15-O-III, and its VAM numbers are 31, 40 and 110.
