Description

1878 WDDO-005 is a doubled die obverse on the 1878 Morgan dollar (Reverse of 1879), cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler places the doubling on the E PL, R and S of E PLURIBUS and on all the stars at left and right; LIBERTY is spread slightly to the left. On Obverse Stage A, a thin scratch runs SW through the R in LIBERTY, and between the hair curls over the 78 lies a horizontal scratch. Obverse Stage B shows clash marks heading NW from the nose, the lips and the upper chin and heading SW from the top of the neck, along with many NW/SE polish lines through the hair and around the bonnet and light NE/SW polish lines on the eye. Obverse Stage C matches Stage B. Reverse Stage A is the VAM-81 die pairing. Reverse Stage B is WDDR-005 in the VAM-33 pairing: a patch of polish lines reaches into the eagle's throat on its left side, the upper right leaves show polishing, and polish lines cross TRUST. Reverse Stage C is the VAM-30 pairing, with an unnumbered doubled reverse (WDDR-???). Istvan Henrik submitted the variety, and Brian Allen took further photos, of a coin that John A. Wexler provided. CONECA lists it as 14-O-III; its VAM numbers are 30, 33 and 81.
