The 1871 Proof Nickel Pattern - J-1058 is a proof five-cent pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. It was struck from the regular 1871 Shield nickel dies. USPatterns.com regards the 1871 off-metal strikings from the regular dies as pieces made for sale to collectors in complete sets, cent through double eagle, rather than true die trials. The single example is magnetic and may be pure nickel or iron; it was in the Brenner display at the 1914 ANS exhibition and later with Brand, and its present location is unknown. It is struck in steel or pure nickel with a plain edge. USPatterns.com lists it as unique. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1193 and Adams-Woodin 1190. Cataloged as PCGS #61317.
