Description
The 1871 Proof Nickel Pattern - J-1052 is a proof five-cent pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. Its obverse is a small Liberty head facing left in a coronet, close to the nickel three-cent portrait, and its reverse shows a V above CENTS inside a wreath, the V shaded on the wrong side so that it looks reversed. About a dozen are known in aluminum. It is struck in aluminum with a plain edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1186, Adams-Woodin 1195 and Taxay EP814. Cataloged as PCGS #61311.
