Description
Leading the extensive 1871 nickel pattern subseries, J-1050 features the Shield obverse with rays design that had been discontinued after a single year of production in 1866-1867, paired with a numeral 5 reverse within a circle of stars. Struck in the standard silver alloy, this pattern revisits the abandoned with-rays format under Linderman's experimental composition. The rays had been removed from production Shield nickels due to striking difficulties, but their reappearance on this pattern indicates ongoing interest in the more visually dynamic original design.
