Description
Transitioning to the Shield without rays obverse, J-1053 pairs this production-style design with the numeral 5 reverse and was struck in the standard silver alloy. The without-rays Shield had been the standard production nickel design since 1867, making this pattern a direct test of how the familiar circulating design would appear in Linderman's proposed silver composition. The contrast between this piece and an ordinary Shield nickel would have been subtle but meaningful to trained eyes.
