Description
The 1871 Proof Nickel Pattern - J-1052a is a proof five-cent pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. Its obverse is a small Liberty head facing left in a coronet, close to the nickel three-cent portrait, and its reverse shows a V above CENTS inside a wreath, the V shaded on the wrong side so that it looks reversed. It is struck on a broad planchet, and the example USPatterns.com records is the Mitchelson coin in the Connecticut State Library. It is struck in aluminum with a plain edge. USPatterns.com lists it as unique. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1187, Adams-Woodin 1196 and Taxay EP814. Cataloged as PCGS #61829.
