Description
The copper companion to J-1050, this Shield nickel with rays pattern demonstrates the design in a metal that dramatically changes its visual character. Where the standard silver version appeared bright and lustrous, the copper striking gives the shield and rays motif a warmer, more antiquarian appearance. Copper strikings of nickel-denomination patterns carry inherent numismatic irony, translating a coin named for its composition into an entirely different metal.
