Description
The copper striking of the prophetic Liberty Head obverse and V reverse design, J-1057 translates this forward-looking concept into a warm-toned base metal. The Liberty Head portrait on this 1871 pattern shows William Barber's interpretation of the classical female profile that his son Charles would later refine for the 1883 production nickel. Copper highlights the portrait's fine detail in ways the silvery standard silver alloy does not, giving the design a distinctive warmth.
