The 1871 Proof Nickel Pattern - J-1056 is a proof five-cent pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. It was struck from the regular 1871 Shield nickel dies. USPatterns.com regards the 1871 off-metal strikings from the regular dies as pieces made for sale to collectors in complete sets, cent through double eagle, rather than true die trials. Four examples believed to be different are known in copper. It is struck in copper with a plain edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1191 and Adams-Woodin 1191. Cataloged as PCGS #61315.
