Description
Closing the sixteen-entry 1871 half dime pattern series, J-1073 was struck in aluminum and brings the metallurgical survey of this denomination to its most experimental conclusion. The half dime would be abolished by the Coinage Act of 1873, making these 1871 patterns among the last serious design explorations for America's smallest silver denomination. The complete half dime pattern series for 1871 documents more design and composition variations than any previous single year in the denomination's eight-decade history.
