Description
The aluminum member of the first Seated Liberty half dime group, J-1061 weighs mere fractions of a gram, making it one of the lightest coins in the entire Trade Dollar era pattern program. The Seated Liberty figure appears almost ghostly on the silvery-white aluminum planchet, her form rendered in the faintest relief by this extraordinarily soft metal. Few numismatic objects so powerfully illustrate the radical ambition of 1870s metallurgical experimentation.
Rarity Notes
R-7 to R-8. Very rare, approximately 3-8 examples survive.
