Description
Opening the sixteen-variety half dime subseries for 1871, J-1059 features a Seated Liberty obverse with the LIBERTY inscription on a shield held by the seated figure, paired with a wreath reverse enclosing HALF DIME. Struck in the standard silver alloy, this pattern tests the established half dime design under Linderman's proposed composition during the denomination's final years before the Coinage Act of 1873 would abolish it. The half dime, America's smallest silver coin since 1794, was being simultaneously tested and sentenced to retirement.
