Description
Featuring yet another Seated Liberty obverse variation paired with a different reverse treatment, J-1068 was struck in the standard silver alloy. The proliferation of half dime designs in 1871 reflects the denomination's complex position in the coinage hierarchy: while Congress was preparing to abolish it, the Mint continued exploring design improvements as if the half dime would continue indefinitely. This disconnect between legislative intent and engraving ambition produced some of the most creative pattern designs in the series.
