Description

The 1871 Proof Half Dime Pattern - J-1067a is a proof half dime pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. Its obverse is James B. Longacre's Indian Princess design, cut into dies by William Barber, who succeeded Longacre after his death in 1869: Liberty, in an Indian headdress, sits facing left with her left hand on a globe bearing a LIBERTY scroll and her right holding a pole topped by a liberty cap, with flags behind her. This die has stars around the border, and the reverse is the Standard Silver reverse of 1870, with STANDARD above the denomination in a wreath of corn, cotton and wheat. USPatterns.com reports that the Mint sold the Longacre designs in sets running from the half dime up to the silver dollar. The single nickel piece was in the Brenner display at the 1914 ANS exhibition and with Brand, appeared in the 1954 Farouk sale, and was not seen again until 2021; NGC records it as 70% copper and 30% nickel.
