Description
The 1870 Proof Gold Dollar Pattern - J-1025 is a proof gold dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Standard Silver Patterns (1870) series. It was struck from the regular 1870 gold dollar dies. USPatterns.com regards the 1870 off-metal strikings from regular dies as pieces made for sale to collectors in complete sets, cent through double eagle, rather than true die trials. One nickel piece is known, from Woodin's 1914 ANS exhibit, the Newcomer collection and the Farouk sale. It is struck in nickel with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-8. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1160 and Adams-Woodin 846. Cataloged as PCGS #61273.
