Description
Barber struck this copper dollar pattern using the Seated Liberty obverse and regular eagle reverse with a reeded edge, producing a piece that mimics the appearance of the production dollar in every detail except its composition. Copper impressions from production dollar dies occupy a unique position in the pattern hierarchy: they are simultaneously utilitarian test pieces and collectible objects, created to evaluate die performance while also satisfying the growing numismatic market for Mint curiosities. The eagle reverse renders particularly well in copper, with the metal's flow characteristics producing crisp feather detail.
