Description

Among the most numismatically significant dollar patterns of 1870, J-1022 exists in both business strike and proof versions — an unusual distinction in the world of pattern coinage. The business strike examples were produced from a different obverse die than the proofs, identifiable by the position of the date relative to the shield point: on business strikes the date sits lower with the 1 below the shield point, while on proofs the date is positioned higher and to the right. This nickel striking from the regular Seated Liberty dies demonstrates how the dollar design performed in pure nickel, a metal far harder than either silver or copper, producing exceptionally sharp detail.

Rarity Notes

R-7. Extremely rare, estimated 4-12 examples known across both business strike and proof versions.
