Description
Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge, this Seated Liberty dollar pattern with STANDARD wreath reverse represents one of the most exotic compositions in the 1870 dollar subseries. An aluminum dollar would have weighed barely a fraction of its silver counterpart, creating a profoundly unfamiliar tactile experience for anyone accustomed to the substantial heft of a Seated Liberty dollar. Aluminum refining remained prohibitively expensive before the Hall-Heroult electrolytic process of 1886, making each aluminum striking a demonstration piece in a metal more precious than silver at the time.
