Description
Translating the Seated Liberty obverse and STANDARD wreath reverse into copper, J-998 provides a base-metal comparison piece for the silver dollar patterns that precede it. Copper strikings of dollar patterns served a dual purpose in the 1870 program: they demonstrated how the same dies performed across different alloys and provided more affordable specimens for distribution to collectors and Congressional evaluators. The warm reddish tones of the copper contrast dramatically with the cool silver of J-996, revealing how a design's visual impact depends as much on its metal as on its engraving. Struck with a reeded edge.
