Description
An aluminum striking from the regular 1870 Seated Liberty dollar production dies, J-1021 translates the year's circulating design into the lightest metal available to the Mint. Where J-1020 in copper preserved the visual weight of a dollar coin, J-1021 in aluminum reduces the piece to a ghostly shadow of its silver production counterpart. The extremely low mintage of aluminum regular-die dollar strikings reflects their status as premium collector items rather than systematic metallurgical experiments, produced in tiny quantities for the most well-connected numismatists of the era.
