Description
Aluminum brings an otherworldly lightness to the Liberty Head obverse with eagle reverse combination, producing a dollar-sized pattern that weighs a mere fraction of its silver equivalent. The eagle reverse, with its detailed rendering of feathers, shield, and olive branch, required significant striking pressure even in soft metals, and aluminum's tendency to flow readily under the press yielded particularly sharp impressions of Barber's fine engraving. Struck with a reeded edge, J-1018 is one of the scarcer aluminum dollar patterns in the 1870 program, with very few examples recorded by pattern specialists.
