Description
The plain-edge copper counterpart to J-1016, this Liberty Head with eagle reverse dollar pattern presents Barber's design combination in a format that maximizes the medal-like qualities of the piece. Without reeding to declare its status as a coin, the plain-edge copper dollar resembles a small medal or token more than a monetary instrument. Copper Liberty Head dollar patterns from the 1870 Standard Silver program are especially prized by collectors tracing the evolution of Barber's portrait style toward the designs he would ultimately adopt for the 1892 dime, quarter, and half dollar series.
Rarity Notes
R-6. Rare, estimated 15-25 examples known. Low R-6 per some references.
