Description
The 1870 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1014 is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Standard Silver Patterns (1870) series. Its obverse is a seated Liberty after a design by James B. Longacre, who died in 1869; USPatterns.com believes William Barber carried it out. Liberty appears as an Indian princess facing left, with a pole and cap in her right hand, her left hand on a globe inscribed LIBERTY, two flags behind her, LONGACRE below the base, 13 stars around and the date below. Its reverse is the regular Seated Liberty dollar die, with the perched eagle and IN GOD WE TRUST on a ribbon above. Fewer than a dozen are known in silver. It is struck in silver with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1148, Adams-Woodin 858 and Taxay EP806. Cataloged as PCGS #61262.
