Description
Combining the Liberty Head obverse with the regular heraldic eagle reverse, J-1014 creates the most production-ready alternative dollar design in the 1870 Standard Silver series. Struck in silver with a reeded edge, this pattern pairs Barber's new portrait concept with the established eagle reverse that the American public already trusted on its circulating dollars. Had the Standard Silver proposal succeeded and included a design change, J-1014 represents the combination to have been selected: a fresh obverse modernizing the look of the dollar while a familiar reverse preserved visual continuity with the existing coinage.
