Description
The 1870 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1012 is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Standard Silver Patterns (1870) series. Its obverse is a seated Liberty after a design by James B. Longacre, who died in 1869; USPatterns.com believes William Barber carried it out. Liberty appears as an Indian princess facing left, with a pole and cap in her right hand, her left hand on a globe inscribed LIBERTY, two flags behind her, LONGACRE below the base, 13 stars around and the date below. Its reverse is the STANDARD 1 DOLLAR die of J-996, with the denomination inside a wreath of cotton and corn. About three are known in aluminum. It is struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-8. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1146 and Adams-Woodin 856. Cataloged as PCGS #61260.
