Description

Pairing the same Liberty Head obverse with the STANDARD wreath reverse on a plain-edge silver planchet, J-1009 allowed contemporary evaluators to assess how this design combination performed without the visual and tactile framework of a reeded edge. The Liberty Head portrait Barber created for the 1870 Standard Silver series anticipated the design vocabulary he would refine over the next two decades, eventually producing the Liberty Head designs adopted for the dime, quarter, and half dollar in 1892. These early dollar-denomination portraits represent the formative stage of that long design evolution. Cataloged as PCGS #61257.
