Description
Rendering the Seated Liberty obverse and regular eagle reverse in aluminum with a reeded edge, J-1006 is among the rarest entries in the eagle-reverse dollar group. The heraldic eagle motif, originally conceived for weighty silver and gold coins, takes on an almost surreal quality when struck in a metal so light that the finished dollar would float on mercury. Aluminum eagle-reverse dollars were produced in extremely limited quantities even by pattern standards, reserved for the most dedicated collectors and Mint officials who understood the metallurgical significance of these experimental compositions.
Rarity Notes
