Description
The eighth and final cent pattern variety cataloged for 1868, this proof specimen closes out the most extensive single-year cent pattern program in the Reconstruction era. J-612 marks the culmination of experimental work that spanned four years from 1866 through 1868, producing a substantial body of experimental evidence documenting the Indian Head cent's evolution during the post-Civil War period. The following year, 1869, would see the cent pattern program continue under the new direction of William Barber, who brought his own artistic vision to the Chief Engraver's role.
