Description

This proof cent pattern from 1868 was produced during the final year of James B. Longacre's active service as Chief Engraver, before his death on January 1, 1869. The Indian Head design that Longacre had introduced in 1859 continued to evolve through experimental varieties, with J-605 representing the first in a substantial series of eight cent pattern varieties for 1868. The cent had successfully incorporated the IN GOD WE TRUST motto in previous years, and these later patterns may explore further refinements to the design or test alternative compositions. The bronze planchet reflects the standard alloy adopted in 1864.
