Description
This proof cent pattern from 1868 was produced during the final year of James B. Longacre's active service as Chief Engraver, before his death on January 1, 1869. Its obverse borrows Longacre's Liberty head from the nickel three-cent piece, wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, and its reverse shows a plain Roman numeral I inside an agricultural wreath of wheat, corn, cotton and tobacco. It was issued in sets with matching three-cent and five-cent pieces; USPatterns.com counts three or four dozen in nickel. It is struck in nickel with a plain edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-5. It is also catalogued as Pollock-670, Adams-Woodin 698 and Taxay EP507. Cataloged as PCGS #60817.
