Description
This proof cent pattern is the sixth variety in the 1868 series, demonstrating the continued breadth of the Mint's experimental program. The proximity of these experiments to Longacre's death lends them particular historical significance, as they represent some of the last experimental designs produced under his tenure as Chief Engraver. William Barber, who would succeed Longacre on January 18, 1869, was involved in the preparation of these dies, creating a potential overlap of artistic sensibilities within the 1868 pattern program.
