Description

A proof striking of the fifth 1868 cent pattern variety, J-609 continues the experimental program for the Indian Head denomination. By 1868, the bronze composition and basic design framework of the Indian Head cent were firmly established, having been refined through the transition from copper-nickel to bronze in 1864 and the addition of the national motto in 1866. Patterns from this late stage of the Reconstruction period explored fine-tuning of design elements such as letter spacing, star placement, or the depth of design relief, all of which affected both aesthetics and die longevity.
