Description
A second proof cent pattern for 1868, this piece continues the experimental series begun with J-605. The relatively large number of cent pattern varieties for 1868 indicates the Mint was conducting a more thorough design review than in the previous two years, anticipating changes that might accompany the departure of the aging Chief Engraver. Longacre was in declining health throughout 1868, and assistant engraver William Barber was increasingly handling die preparation duties. This transition of artistic leadership may be reflected in subtle differences across the 1868 cent pattern varieties.
