Description

Judd-389, Pollock-460, is the sixth 1864 proof quarter motto pattern. As one of the later varieties in the sequence, J-389 represents a near-final design configuration. The subtle differences between the later quarter patterns (J-387 through J-390) would be apparent primarily to specialists, as the broad design concept was well established by this point. These fine-tuning iterations document the meticulous attention to detail that characterized 19th-century Mint engraving practice.
