Description

Judd-387, Pollock-458, is the fourth 1864 proof quarter motto pattern. By this midpoint in the 1864 quarter series, the design was progressing toward its final form. The seven varieties from J-384 through J-390 represent increasingly refined iterations of the motto placement concept, with each variety testing specific adjustments to achieve optimal visual balance on the quarter-sized reverse. The heraldic eagle's wings, shield, and surrounding legends all needed to accommodate the new text.
