Judd-385, Pollock-456, is the second 1864 proof quarter With Motto pattern. The seven 1864 quarter varieties represent the second-largest single-denomination group in the year's pattern program, after the twelve two-cent varieties. This indicates the quarter denomination presented significant design challenges that required extensive experimentation to resolve. The motto's placement relative to the heraldic eagle, the scroll or banner design, and the interaction with existing legends all needed careful calibration.
