Description

Judd-384, Pollock-455, is the first of seven 1864 proof quarter With Motto patterns (J-384 through J-390). This extensive series expands significantly on the three 1863 quarter patterns, indicating that the quarter denomination required considerable additional refinement during 1864. The Seated Liberty quarter's reverse provided a medium-sized field for the motto — larger than the dime but smaller than the half dollar — creating specific design challenges. Struck in silver with proof finish.
