Description
Judd-344, Pollock-396, is the seventh and final 1863 proof half dollar motto pattern, completing the year's contribution to what would become a four-year development program (1861-1864). This variety represents the most refined 1863 version of the motto design, incorporating all adjustments made through the series. The With Motto Seated Liberty half dollar would not enter regular production until 1866, but the essential design had been substantially worked out through patterns like J-344 by the end of 1863. The three-year delay between the mature design and its adoption was due to legislative rather than design considerations.
