Description
Judd-340, Pollock-392, continues the 1863 half dollar motto pattern series. This third variety may introduce a different scroll design for the motto, an altered eagle pose, or modifications to the supporting design elements such as arrows and olive branch. The large number of half dollar patterns from 1863 reflects the denomination's importance as the design laboratory for the motto concept. Each variety represents a concrete proposal that was examined by Mint Director James Pollock and potentially reviewed by Treasury Secretary Salmon P. Chase, who had initiated the motto project.
